Common Name: MDF Alternative Names: Medium Density Fiber Board Description: MDF or Medium Density Fiber Board is made up of very small wood fibers and glue. It is used in woodworking and now is gaining popularity in house trim due to its workability and lower cost. Don't let the name fool you, MDF is a relatively heavy sheet good. It is heavier than plywood. Because the wood fibers are so small, it is not as stiff as plywood. The heavy weight and lack of stiffness make it a relatively poor choice for unsupported spans. MDF does have a couple of very nice advantages. Because it has no grain, it machines well and tends not to produce chip-out. It is also ideal for painting and takes paint well. Hardness: Price: $
